Monsoon set to withdraw from Northwest India

September 24, 2015 12:00 PM |

WithdrawalMonsoon is likely to start withdrawing from the Northwest India any time after next two days, almost four days later than normal. With rains moving away from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi/NCR and Rajasthan and giving way to dry weather and reversal of wind pattern in the region, Southwest Monsoon is slated to commence its withdrawal before the weekend.

According to Skymet, signs of Monsoon's withdrawal are beginning to appear as dry and hot weather is likely to set in with rains rapidly pacing towards East and Northeast India, leaving behind the plains of North India. Conditions are also indicating the formation of anti-cyclone over Rajasthan. These two are few of the most important criteria for the withdrawal of Monsoon.

Due to the rainy spell during the past week, the countrywide rainfall deficiency has managed to bridge a huge gap as it currently stands at 13% from being at 16% on 12th September. This dip has been attributed to the multiple weather systems that originated in the Bay of Bengal during past few days.

The weather systems proved to be instrumental in providing sufficient rainfall to the rain-deficit pockets of Central and Peninsular India where substantial drop in rainfall deficiency has been observed. For instance, the deficiency in Marathwada dropped to 36% from 51% in past few days.

The Monsoon normally completes its withdrawal from Northwest India, including Delhi, around September 21. Though Monsoon withdrawal this year remained arrested from parts of Northwest India after it withdrew from Rajasthan on September 8.
