After being gripped under heatwave conditions for the last few days, the state of Maharashtra is now experiencing good pre-Monsoon rains. These rains helped in pulling the soaring mercury levels to upper 30’s.
In the past day as well, moderate to heavy showers were recorded over Konkan and parts of Marathwada. Meanwhile, the intensity of rains over most parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha varied from light to moderate. On the contrary, parts of north Madhya Maharashtra remained dry.
In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Solapur recorded 95 mm of rains, Ratnagiri 63 mm, Nanded 54 mm, Udgir 53 mm, Yeotmal 37 mm, Vengurla 32 mm, Mumbai’s Santacruz recorded 41 mm of rains, meanwhile, Colaba observatory recorded 30 mm of pre-Monsoon showers.

The reason for these rains can be associated with the offshore trough running along the West Coast, extending from South Maharashtra to North Kerala. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation is also marked over Marathwada.

As per the latest update, Southwest Monsoon has already stepped in the state and has covered some parts of South Konkan, South Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha. Thus, we expect moderate to heavy showers to continue over many parts of Marathwada, and South Madhya Maharashtra in the stations like Solapur, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, and Pune.
In addition to this, heavy to extremely heavy rains may also occur over South Konkan division like Ratnagiri, Vengurla, in next 24-48 hours. Mumbai may also receive moderate showers during the afternoon hours today. The intensity of Mumbai rains may increase by night and during that time, few heavy spells are also possible. In addition to this, moderate to heavy rains would continue until June 10 as well.

In the expected event of heavy rainfall over most parts of Maharashtra, farmers are recommended to complete the land preparation (ploughing, harrowing, cleaning and land leveling) for the sowing of Kharif crops.
Farmers are also advised to use certified seeds of recommended varieties for sowing of Kharif crops. Farmers are recommended to undertake sowing of Kharif crops on retention of sufficient soil moisture or ‘Wafasa’ conditions. Farmers are also advised to open drainage channels in the fields so that excess water can be drained easily.
