Monsoon rains have been missing from Chennai for the last several days. In wake of this, weather over the capital city has been hot and humid.
Now the good news is that, Monsoon rains are all set to make a comeback over the city. According to Skymet Weather, a fresh Monsoon system has developed in west-central of Bay of Bengal which is likely to move inland.
Though the system will mainly activate the off-shore trough along the West Coast but the peripherals of the system will also impact the weather over coastal parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
In wake of this, Chennai will start recording rain and thundershowers from June 19 which are likely to continue till June 22.
Rains may not be in heavy in nature but scattered light to moderate showers will be witnessed over the region during this period. These showers will bring much needed relief from the scorching weather.
Though presence of Monsoon surge has kept the day temperatures around normal but increased levels of humidity has pushed the night temperatures several degrees above average. On Thursday, day maximum settled at 37.4°C, while minimum temperature was recorded at 30.2 °C which was three degrees above normal.
We can expect sky to become cloudy from June 18 only and as the system gets more organised while moving inland, rains will start making appearance over Chennai.
So far, the city has recorded 41 mm of rain against the monthly average of 55.9 mm. Being a rain shadow area, entire Tamil Nadu including Chennai do not get much rains during the four-month long season that spans from June to September.
Both the state and its capital city record their major rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon that extends from October till December.
