The Monsoon trough is running close to the foothills of Himalayas extending along the Indo-Gangetic plains up to Northeastern states from the past three days.
This has resulted in heavy to very rains over the foothills of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar as well as Nepal region.

In a span of 24 hours; Banda recorded rains to the tune of 73 mm, Varanasi 60 mm, Fursatganj 39 mm, Muzaffarnagar 23 mm, Hardoi 16 mm, Meerut 12 mm, Bahraich 9 mm, Gaya 9 mm, Supaul 7 mm, Kanpur 6 mm and Chapra 6 mm.
Consequently; rivers like Rabti, Bagmati, Kamala Balan and Lal Bakaiya are in spate. Similarly; rivers such as Ganges, Budhi Gandaki, Mahananda and Bhakra registered sharp surge in the water levels.
These could be attributed to the rainfall that persisted in light to moderate intensity from past two to three days.
Now, the cyclonic circulation developing in North Bay of Bengal is pulling the Monsoon trough southwards. As a result; the foothills would see great relief, otherwise the system is likely to shift inland during the next 24-36 hours. With this, the rainfall is expected to pick up pace over eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar such as Varanasi, Sultanpur, Gorakhpur, Patna and Gaya.
In the meantime, remaining portion of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may see significant rain in soaring order after 48 hours.
As on July 3, division-wise; both East and West Uttar Pradesh are rain deficient by 36% and 26%, respectively. Likewise, Bihar is deficit by 19%.
