Monsoon rains have been miraculous along the west coastal belt of the country. Most of the coastal stations along the West Coast have been constantly witnessing Monsoon showers. Though the intensity of the rains has been fluctuating.
However, heavy to extremely heavy rains have not occurred along the coast after the second week of July. Thereafter, the rains have mostly remained and ranged from light to slightly moderate.
In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Monday, Karwar recorded 2 mm of rains, Honavar 7 mm, Shirali 8 mm, Mangaluru 8 mm, Cannur 9 mm, Karipur 10 mm, Kochi 0.1 mm, Punaluru 12 mm and Thiruvananthapuram witnessed 12 mm of rains.
The reason for the reduction in rain activity along the coast can be attributed with the weakening of the Monsoon Surge. But due to the formation of a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha, the westerly winds would now get strengthen leading to an increase in the intensity of rains over Kerala and Karnataka.
Hence, we expect moderate rains with one or two heavy spells to occur along the West Coast.
As on August 6, Kerala is rain surplus by 13% and coastal Karnataka is rain deficient by 3% which is otherwise considered as normal.
