During the four months long Southwest Monsoon season, the West Coast including the regions of Coastal Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka as well as Kerala receive very good showers. So much so that three digit rains are a common affair in these areas.
This year, initially, the Monsoon progress was very good over West Coast and it reached up to South Gujarat by June 12. However, thereafter, rain performance over the West Coast became sluggish and Monsoon did not progress further along the West Coast.
These conditions were attributed to the weakening of Monsoon surge along with the weak off shore trough along Konkan and Goa. A feeble trough did persist which resulted in a few good spells of rain over South Konkan and Karnataka coast, but these rains could not amount into three-digit rain figures.

Presently, Kerala has been witnessing a deficiency of 32 percent while the Konkan region is deficient by 4 percent.
Now it seems like Monsoon rains are all set to pick up pace. In fact, the off-shore trough has become activated during the last 24 hours. Along with this, a fresh Monsoon surge will also become active.

During the next 48 hours, a cyclonic circulation is expected to develop over South Gujarat and North Arabian Sea which will further activate the Monsoon surge. Thus, Monsoon 2017 will cover some more parts of Gujarat.
