After refraining from occurring over Uttarakhand and Himachal from almost a fortnight, Monsoon rains showed their fierce face in the last 24 hours. Due to these moderate to heavy rains, people planning to visit the hills this weekend were forced to halt their travel plans. In fact, one or two incidents of landslides were reported in parts of Uttarakhand as well.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Friday, Mukteshwar Kumaon recorded a whopping three-digit rainfall to the tune of 113 mm, followed by Pant Nagar with 88 mm of rains, Haridwar 60 mm, Shimla 40 mm, Tehri 38 mm, Solan 35 mm, Dehradun 33 mm, Manali 31 mm, and Dharamshala witnessed 27 mm of rains. Moreover, in the last 6 hours, between 08:30 to 14:30 Mukteshwar has recorded 86 mm of rains.

The reason for these moderate to heavy rains can be attributed to the Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area which was over North Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Southwest Uttar Pradesh. Alongside, the Western Disturbance also persisted over the eastern part of Jammu & Kashmir. These two weather systems gave flood causing torrential showers over the hilly states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

However, now, this weather system has shifted northwards and is presently seen over West Uttar Pradesh and adjoining area. Moreover, the Western Disturbance is also seen moving and thus the rains are likely to now witness a decreasing trend over the hilly states.

However, good rains will continue to show up in parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh until tomorrow morning. The threat of flash flood, landslides and cloudburst will still loom. The temperature will curtail and pleasant conditions will continue to prevail. Henceforth, the rains will reduce.
