Monsoon rains to increase in Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya; no relief from flood foreseen

Since the arrival of Monsoon over the northeastern states of the country, several districts of Northeast India are affected badly by flooding rains. It seems that Monsoon rains this year are accompanied by floods for a few districts of the region particularly Assam.

The effect of these torrential rains upon the Northeastern region can even be made out of the fact that over a lakh of people are dislocated and several other are still wearing the brunt of flash floods. Most areas are submerged under flooding rain water and with moderate to heavy showers predicted to continue over the region, relief is not yet in sight.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Sunday, Dibrugarh recorded 29 mm of rains, North Lakhimpur 26 mm, Goalpara 21 mm, Majbat 18 mm and Pasighat recorded 19 mm of rains.

The axis of Monsoon trough is running via North Uttar Pradesh, North Bihar, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and turning towards Gangetic West Bengal. Moreover, the southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are also incurring moisture over the area.

As per Skymet Weather, the combination of both these weather systems is the reason behind the light to moderate rainfall that has occurred over many districts of Northeast India. In addition to this, rains are likely to increase over Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. While the other states of Northeast India will also receive moderate rains at many places with the possibility of isolated heavy showers as well.

It is anticipated that these good spells of rain will continue for at least next 2 days. Thereafter the intensity of these rains may reduce marginally. But scattered rains will keep showing over the region. As most parts of Northeast India is already reeling under flood like situation, these torrential rains may further aggravate the situation.
