With perseverance of off shore along the West Coast, moderate to heavy rains accompanied with isolated extremely heavy falls occurred over Kerala during the past two to three days. Similarly, moderate to heavy showers were observed along the coastline of Karnataka.
This weather feature is persisting over the region since the beginning of July, but now the system has weakened and thus, the intensity of showers would decrease over both Kerala as well as Karnataka to some extent. Still, light to moderate rains will continue to whip these southern states.

Throughout 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Agumbe recorded hefty rains to the tune of 199 mm, followed by Kozhikode 104 mm, Kochi 83 mm, Kottayam 66 mm, Kannur 65 mm, Madikeri 52 mm, Alappuzha 46 mm, Belagavi 23 mm, Punalur 18 mm, Honnavar 17 mm, Mangaluru 17 mm, Karwar 15 mm and Thiruvananthapuram saw 8 mm of light spells.
This off shore along the West Coast is a semi-permanent feature and in view of this, we are hoping the system to again activate after July 22, thus enhancing the intensity of showers significantly along the coast of Kerala and Karnataka. Places such as Kozhikode, Kochi, Kannur, Mangaluru, Honavar and Karwar would witness the rains.
On the other hand, the interior parts of Karnataka, be it north or south, both will continue to see subdued activity only. We do not anticipate any significant weather system to form over Southeast Arabian Sea or Southwest Bay Of Bengal in the coming days that could increase the rains over Interior Karnataka.
As on July 17, Kerala and Karnataka are rain surplus by 18% and 14%, respectively. In fact, all the three sub divisions of Karnataka stands rain surplus, North Interior Karnataka by 2%, South Interior Karnataka 23% and Coastal Karnataka 13%.
