Monsoon rains to continue over Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh

Tamil Nadu has been witnessing good rains from the past few days. Interior Tamil Nadu received light to moderate rains with a few heavy spells in the past day. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday, Coimbatore witnessed heavy rain of 88 mm and K. Paramathy 32 mm of rain.

In the same span of time, moderate intensity rain to the tune of 19 mm was recorded in Kodaikanal and Salem witnessed light rain of 6 mm. Andhra Pradesh also recorded rainy spells at a few places, wherein Anantapur witnessed 25 mm of rain and Tuni 36 mm.

Other places such as Kakinada and Visakhapatnam observed very light Monsoon rains. These rains can be attributed to the north south trough which is running across Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Interior Tamil Nadu and the cyclonic circulation which is persisting over Interior parts of Tamil Nadu.

As per Skymet Weather, it is anticipated that the trough may oscillate west or east wards but it will continue to give rains and thundershower activities over many parts of Tamil Nadu and Coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next two to three days. Meanwhile, Rayalaseema may also record light to moderate rains with few heavy spells.

As on September 4, Tamil Nadu is rain surplus by 39 percent and has received highest rain this Monsoon season among all the states of South India. This is an unusual phenomenon for Tamil Nadu as it lies in the rain shadow area.

Meanwhile, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is rain surplus by 21 percent and Rayalaseema by 19 percent of rains and with the ongoing showers, the rain surplus will increase.

Light to moderate rain and thunder shower with strong gusty wind may occur at some parts over Cuddapah, East Godavari, Guntur, Krishna, Kurnool, Nellore, Prakasam, Srikakulam, Vishakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and West Godavari in the next six hours.
