Monsoon rains to continue over Konkan including Mumbai

July 21, 2023 12:37 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The Konkan and Goa region has been active with rains of varied intensity being observed over these areas. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Ratnagiri 75 mm, Harnai 71 mm, Thane 48 mm, Goa 76 mm, and Mumbai's Santa Cruz 29 mm.

Today also, we expect some rains to continue over Mumbai. Other parts of Konkan may see some showers as well. Tomorrow, we can expect rains in Mumbai as well as Konkan to be slightly heavier.

Mumbai has already received 937 mm of rain which means that the city had already crossed its monthly mean of 919.9 mm. The city has been seeing rains of varied intensity on a continuous basis for the entire month of July.

The reason for the current rains can be attributed to the remnant of the earliest system coming closer. The low pressure is in the Bay of Bengal. An east-west trough joining these two systems has created a shear zone running across 20°N, from North Madhya Maharashtra to central Odisha.  The shear zone is tilted southward with height. Mumbai is in the proximity of this zone, which may give more rain tomorrow.
