The much awaited Southwest Monsoon finally made an onset over Kolkata on June 17. While the onset over the city of joy was slightly delayed, residents have no complaints as Monsoon rains continue to bring a smile on their faces.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Alipore observatory in Kolkata recorded 6 mm of rain. Also, Dum Dum observatory received 3 mm of rain during this period. On June 17, Kolkata had received 4 mm of rain. In fact, the city of joy also witnessed some light Monsoon rains during the early morning hours today.

These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation, which is currently over South Coastal Odisha and adjoining Bay of Bengal. Due to this system, south-westerly winds have been reaching up to Kolkata resulting in an increase of moisture incursion over the region, furthermore giving good rains over the city.

These Monsoon rains are likely to continue over Kolkata during the next few days. While the intensity will remain on the lighter side, these showers will keep hot weather conditions far away from the city of joy.
