Monsoon rains in the offing for Tamil Nadu

July 14, 2016 4:23 PM | Skymet Weather Team

During the Southwest Monsoon season, the state of Tamil Nadu receives very little rain as it falls under the rain shadow area. In fact, the state receives its share of rain between the months of October and December, i.e. during the Northeast Monsoon season.

So much so that even a strong Monsoon current does not result in heavy rain over the region. Now, the Monsoon trough will shift closer to the foothills and Southwest Monsoon will go mild over Central, Southern and western parts of the country.

However, during such times, rainfall intensity increases over Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema. These conditions occur as whenever the trough shifts, a cyclonic circulation develops over the Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast along with a trough extending from Coastal to South Tamil Nadu.

During the next 24 hours, very light rain is likely over parts of Tamil Nadu. However, after 24 hours, the intensity of rains is expected to increase. So much so that between July 16 and 18, moderate rainfall is expected over Tamil Nadu.

In fact, the possibility of one or two heavy spells of rain also cannot be ruled out. Thereafter, the intensity of rainfall will reduce.
