Monsoon rains in offing for East India

August 8, 2016 6:21 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Since last many days, Gangetic West Bengal has been observing good Monsoon showers while the other states of East India recorded only scattered light rains. This is the foremost reason that East and Northeast India is considered as the most rain deficient region of the country.

A cyclonic circulation which was prevailing over Gangetic West Bengal is likely to intensify further and move into a northwest direction. As a result, heavy to very heavy rains are expected at many places over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand while moderate showers are likely to occur over Bihar and rest parts of West Bengal. Eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh will witness light to moderate rains.

In span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Varanasi recorded 71 mm of rain, while Jamshedpur 40 mm, Alipore and Bhagalpur 19 mm, Purnea 15 mm, Ranchi and Daltonganj received 14 mm of rainfall.

Nonetheless, it is expected that the fresh spell of rain over the region will help to cover up the rain deficiency.

At present, only Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are rainfall surplus by 10 percent, otherwise the rest of the eastern states are rain deficient. Odisha is at 6%, followed by Jharkhand at 20%, Gangetic West Bengal 6%, East Uttar Pradesh 5% and Bihar 12%, respectively.
