Delhi comes to standstill as rains play havoc
Delhi rains have played a havoc over the National Capital along with the adjoining regions. The capital of India has been witnessing massive showers since morning.
It started raining with light drizzles in the morning and took face of torrential downpour after 08:30 am. The condition worsened for the daily commuters where they had to test their patience level getting stuck in traffic snarls.
In last three hours, Safdarjung observatory, Delhi observed heavy rains of 63 mm while during the similar time frame, the Palam observatory witnessed hefty showers of 56 mm.
This was followed by waterlogging at many places at Delhi and NCR. Most of the flights at Delhi IGI Airport were delayed, one of them even diverted to Jaipur. Visibility at the Delhi IGI Airport dropped to 500 meters in the morning due to rains.

Roads were flooding with rain water that made the conditions more unfortunate for locals. Vehicles crawled due to heavy rains at many places. Not only the daily commuters, but Delhi rains played bad with the US Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry who is currently on a visit to India. Due to heavy rains, his visit to Gurudwara Sisganj, Jama Masjid and Gauri Shankar Temple has been cancelled.
Updated on August 31, 11:06 AM: Heavy downpour brings Delhi NCR to halt Rains get vigorous over Delhi and NCR with waterlogging and traffic woes agitating the local daily commuters. These rains can be associated with a cyclonic circulation over Haryana extending up to 3.1 km. Axis of Monsoon trough is also seen in close proximity of Delhi. Moreover, these rains are likely to last for another 6- 12 hours and the National Capital along with adjoining regions are expected to witness moderate rains. However, these rains are expected to reduce gradually as the Monsoon trough is expected to shift towards the foothills of Himalayas. Additionally, traffic snarls were observed at many places over Delhi and adjoining regions. Terrible waterlogging was observed over Sohna road where vehicles crawled near Subhash Chowk.

Delhi rains left a powerful impact on the flights as well . Most of the to and fro flights from Delhi are either delayed due to bad weather or are cancelled.

Up to 08:30 am as on today, the Safdarjung Observatory recorded 3.9 mm showers which makes the monthly total summing up to 122.1 mm as against 247.7 mm of average monthly mean.
On the other hand, Palam observatory observed 2.4 mm of rains making the monthly total counting to 151 mm against the average monthly rainfall of 246 mm.
At present, the total rainfall statistics observed by both the observatories indicates Delhi is still rain deficit. Wherein, the Safdarjung observatory stands at rainfall deficiency of 51%. While, Palam observatory stands at a rainfall deficiency of 39%.
Moreover, as per Skymet Weather, heavy rains over Delhi NCR started after 07:30 am and further is likely to remain for another 6-12 hours. However, thereafter, rains are expected to reduce gradually.
Delhiites welcomed another rainy morning on Wednesday. With rain bearing clouds hovering over Delhi-NCR since early morning hours, intense showers were expected over several parts of the national capital.
At present, several parts of South Delhi along with Noida are reporting moderate to heavy rains. Other parts are also likely to follow soon. The weather has gone extremely pleasant due to these morning showers.
According to weathermen, we can expect more number of good rainy spells during the day.
These rains can be attributed to the axis of Monsoon trough which is currently passing through Agra, south of Delhi. Moreover, easterly winds are also blowing over the region.

However, as we progress further, these Monsoon rains are likely to reduce gradually as the Monsoon trough will oscillate in north direction towards foothills of Himalayas.
Monsoon rains have been lashing the city for last 48 hours. In wake of this, weather across the city has gone pleasant, particularly mornings and evenings. But, high levels of humidity are causing little discomfort.
As on August 30, the cumulative season rainfall for Delhi stands high at 14%. So far in the season from June 1 till August 30, the city has recorded 451 mm of rain against the normal average rainfall of 522.8 mm.
