At present, East and Northeast India is the most rain deficient region with 13% rainfall deficiency. Bihar is 12% rainfall deficient whereas sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim is 4% rainfall deficient. In comparison to these states, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal are slightly wetter with Gangetic West Bengal at steady 9% rainfall surplus and Jharkhand at par with normal rains.
Since the beginning of September, East India has been receiving good rain due to the cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal which intensified into a low-pressure area. This weather system is still persisting over Jharkhand and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal.
Now another fresh cyclonic circulation has developed over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha. Therefore good rains are likely to continue over most parts of East India. North Bihar and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim can get moderate rain at many places with isolated heavy spells expected at few areas of the region.
Jharkhand and Odisha will also receive fairly widespread light to moderate rains. Gangetic West Bengal may receive scattered light to moderate rains.
In the last 24 hours, rainfall over various places in Jharkhand was: Ranchi 15.2, Jamshedpur 10.7 mm, and Bokaro received 4.5 mm. In Odisha, places that received good rains were: Bhawanipatna 15 mm, Pulbani 23.6 mm and Keonjhargarh 8.5 mm.
