Monsoon rains continue to lash Northeastern states

Good Monsoon rains are going over the entire Northeast India including sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Usually during Southwest Monsoon, the Northeastern states receive exceptional rainfall.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Itanagar recorded a whopping of 125 mm and Dhubri 84 mm of Monsoon showers. Other areas that have received good rains include North Lakhimpur 40 mm of rainfall, Jorhat 34.2 mm, Lumding 33.4 mm, Gangtok 31 mm and Tezpur 29 mm of rainfall.

These rains can be attributed to the moist southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal that is reaching upto these northeastern states.

Monsoon rains are likely to continue over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim during next 24 hours. Many areas are expected to witness moderate with isolated heavy showers. However, rain intensity is likely to remain light to moderate over NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura).

East and Northeast India are at present witnessing rainfall deficiency of 14%. As on September 21, 2016 the region comprising Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura is rain deficient by 18% while the subdivision of Assam and Meghalaya is rain deficient by 33%. It is only Arunachal Pradesh where rain deficiency is 7% which falls under the normal rain category.
