Monsoon rain saga continues over Chennai, as the city recorded showers for the second consecutive day. However, showers were light in nature and were not as heavy as on Sunday.
In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, the city has recorded 9 mm of rain. According to Skymet Weather, this wet spell was on account of a development of a fresh cyclonic circulation in west-central Bay of Bengal and a trough extending from this system running along the East Coast.
As we move further, this trough will now merge with the circulation. With this, rain activity will now reduce over Tamil Nadu and will be more focused over coastal parts of North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
However, on and off light Monsoon rains cannot be ruled out over Chennai and neighbouring areas during the next 24 to 48 hours.
Thereafter, rains will pick up once again from July 23 on account of another Monsoon system that is likely to develop in Southwest Bay of Bengal by that time.
So far, Chennai has recorded 55 mm of rain against the monthly average rainfall of 100.3 mm. With more rains in offing, we are hopeful that city will be able to achieve its target with ease.
Tamil Nadu including Chennai is a rain shadow area and thus, does not receive a lot of rain during the Southwest Monsoon. The state records its major rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon wherein Chennai records more than 60% of its annual rainfall.
