When Monsoon sets over mainland India, the West Coast, particularly Kerala starts receiving very good rainfall. Gradually, Karnataka and Maharashtra coast also begin observing good Monsoon rains.
Last month the main Monsoon surge over Kerala was between June 15 and June 20. Several stations in the state recorded very good rainfall during this period. While the adjoining sub-divisions of Karnataka and Konkan and Goa received heavy Monsoon rains between June 17 and June 23.
However, heavy rain over Mumbai started from June 15, and between June 17 and June 20 exceptionally heavy rain was recorded in the city.
Though, Karnataka and Konkan and Goa received second surge of Monsoon between June 30 and July 3, subdued rainfall activity is being observed in the region since then.
Heavy Monsoon rain along the West Coast is usually observed whenever an off-shore trough is stable or active over the region. Another factor that is also responsible for good rain in the region is a low pressure area in the Arabian Sea near Karnataka coast.
According to Skymet Meteorology division in India, no weather system has emerged over the Arabian Sea after the deep depression moved inland towards Gujarat, around June 23. Moreover, the Monsoon trough is active along the foothills of the Himalayas, which has resulted in less rains over the West Coast.
However, we expect the Monsoon surge to strengthen in next 48 hours and give long spell of good Monsoon rain over Konkan and Goa. The Monsoon surge is expected to strengthen as the low pressure area over North Bay of Bengal will intensify and move inland pulling winds from the Arabian Sea.
