Monsoon rain outlook for Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata

Monsoon rains vary as far as the metro cities of India are concerned. While some cities see heavy rainfall, others only record light rains on very few days.

Let us take a look at the Monsoon rains in August:

Delhi- The month of August is the rainiest for Delhi with one third of total rains occurring in this month. The monthly normal for Delhi stands at 232 5 mm. In the last four years, the city has recorded less than 200 mm during August. Lowest rainfall in the last decade during August has been at 122 mm.

Rainfall in Delhi is observed due to the oscillating nature of the axis of the Monsoon trough. The temperatures also take a dip during August and settle in the mid 30s while the minimum are usually recorded in mid twenties. For the next few days, dry weather conditions are expected and rainfall activity will only take place around August 8.

Mumbai: The month of August is the second rainiest of the year with 22 rainy days. The monthly rainfall settles at 585 mm. The poorest rainfall in Mumbai observed in the last 10 years was at 154 mm in 2015 with the highest being at 1036 mm in the year 2010. Generally, cloudy sky conditions are observed during the month of August and temperatures are settled in the mid 30s while minimums settle at around 25 degrees. Strong sea breeze during the evening and night keep temperatures at check.

Mumbai rains occur due to the trough along the West Coast. However, during the next one week, rainfall activity is expected to remain light.

Kolkata: The month of August for Kolkata is also the second rainiest month with the average rainfall being at 345 mm. Weather conditions are similar to July with maximum temperature settling around 30 degrees and humidity remaining on the higher side. No extreme events are observed in terms of heavy rainfall during this time.

Rainfall activity takes place due to the axis of Monsoon trough which runs in close proximity of Kolkata. Rainfall is expected to occur over Kolkata around 5th and 6th of August.

Chennai: The city of Chennai does not receive very good rains during the Southwest Monsoon season and the month of August also remains the same. The monthly mean for August is 127 mm and temperatures are settling in the mid thirties while the minimums settle in the mid 20s.

Rainfall occurs only during the weak Monsoon condition or when break Monsoon conditions are observed. Land breeze and sea breeze provides some relief in terms of weather conditions.

During the next one week, some rainfall activity will continue over Chennai but will remain on the lower side.
