The state of Kerala has a long stretch of 450 km of north-south orientation with sea shore on one side while mountain range on the other. Orography plays an important role in this regard and good rains are caused due to this.
As far as the countrywide Monsoons season is concerned, Kerala does not follow a pattern. The year 2014 was a drought year wherein the state of Kerala has seen 6 percent surplus rains during that time. Meanwhile, during a normal year of 2016, Kerala witnessed drought and rainfall activity was 34 percent deficient for the state.
On the other hand, it has even aligned with the country wherein the year 2012 was a deficient year and the country saw 7 percent less rains and the state was also deficient by 24 percent.
The state of Kerala follows a pattern where rain increased from the southern parts to the northern parts. The southernmost tip of Thiruvananthapuram sees 800 mm of rains during the Southwest Monsoon season while the northernmost part of Kozhikode sees 2240 mm of rainfall. Kannur due to orography sees the most amount of rains at 2600 mm.
Currently, 14 districts are in excess while rains are normal for the other parts of the state. Now, due to flooding rains continuing, the excess figures will increase, and more showers are in the offing which will bring more pockets to the excess side.
