The month of August is one of the core Monsoon months for India while it was below normal for the entire country this time. In fact, regional response has also not been as good. Moreover, the metro cities in India have seen a mixed performance in the month of August in terms of Monsoon rains.

Let us take a look at the Monsoon performance in metro cities during the month of August:

Delhi: For the national capital, the month of August was way better than July. In fact, some heavy spells of rains were witnessed due to which Palam managed to record 182.7 mm of rains against 188.7 mm while Safdarjung observatory saw 206.5 mm of rainfall against 232.5 mm.

Mumbai: The month of July was a bumper one for the city of Mumbai wherein the commercial capital saw four-digit rains. However, the month of August was a disappointing one and Mumbai saw a mere 229 mm against 585 mm of rainfall. The reduction in rains were attributed to the inactive Monsoon trough which usually gives rains over the city of Mumbai.

Chennai: Chennai was the best performer out of all the metro cities and saw above normal rains in the month of August. In fact, Chennai recorded a whopping 200 mm against its average of 120 mm rains. Chennai records rainfall in view of weak Monsoon phase or limited Monsoon period. This time two such rainy spells occurred which caused the rainfall to reach at the above normal levels.

Kolkata: The city of Kolkata sees good amounts of rains with the average rains in August being 345 mm of rainfall but this year, rainfall has been less with August ending at a mere 273 mm of rains. While the city did record rains almost every day of the month, however, rainfall was on the lower side and heavy showers were not observed.
