The mountains and plains in North India are receiving very good rainfall simultaneously. South India is witnessing widespread rainfall in Puducherry and Lakshadweep including Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This is the first time since the Southwest Monsoon 2020 withdrawal, rainfall is observed over a vast area of the country.
Where will it rain in North India
It has been raining in the plains states of North India - Punjab, Haryana, Northern and North-Eastern Rajasthan and Western Uttar Pradesh as well as Delhi for the last two-three days. Heavy rains were also recorded at many places in these parts on 3-4 January 2021.
There is also a possibility of widespread rains in Punjab and Haryana on 5 January. There is a possibility of hail and heavy thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rains on 5-6 January over Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Fazilka, Faridkot, and Sri Muktsar Sahib.
Heavy rainfall and snowfall activities have been observed in many places in the hill states from Jammu and Kashmir to Uttarakhand on 3-4 January. The long spell of rain and snowfall will continue. By January 8, moderate to heavy rain and snow will occur in many places in the hill states. Due to rain and snowfall, the temperature of the day is going to be below normal in most places, resulting in the cold day condition.
Relief from cold wave will continue in the plains till the end of the week. After 8–9 January, cold weather may return again in parts of North India when the minimum temperature will drop drastically.
Weather over the states of South India
The Northeast Monsoon in the states of South India officially ended on 31 December. But there is a good flow of eastern humid winds from the Bay of Bengal, leaving Telangana and northern coastal Andhra Pradesh, the rest of southern peninsular India may get very good rainfall this week. Chances of heavy rains are mainly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Moderate to heavy rain activities will continue over Chennai and Puducherry from January 7-8. Light to moderate rains are likely over South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh.
