Incessant moderate to heavy rainfall continues to lash several parts of both Kerala and Coastal Karnataka. Particularly last 24 hours saw some heavy to extremely heavy rains.
In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on May 31, Thalassery recorded 108 mm of rain, Vadakara 83.2 mm, Karipur AP 96 mm, Mannarkad 145 mm, Kayamkulam 41.2 mm, and Angadippuram 41.2 mm.
In Karnataka, Mangalore received 56.2 mm of rain, followed by Hassan 36.2 mm, Mysuru 34.8 mm, and Karwar 1.1 mm.
These rains hold great relevance for the arrival of the Monsoon over Peninsular India. Particularly the following 14 stations as the rainfall criteria for Monsoon is only met when 2.5 mm of rain is recorded for two consecutive days in over 60 percent of these stations.
With this, the pre-Monsoon season has ended on a rainy note for Kerala with excess rainfall of 22% for the period from March 1 to May 31. This season, pre-Monsoon activities had commenced very late and were also low on intensity in the month of March and April.
However, rain activities picked up pace in May and there was significant rise in the intensity and spread during the last 10 days of the month. Many districts recorded heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during the last week.
Simultaneously, coastal areas of Karnataka have also recorded fairly good rain during last 5-6 days.
Since last few days, the pre-Monsoon rains have transformed into Monsoon like rains as the intensity, duration as well as the cloud cover are almost similar to what we see during the Monsoon. Though one odd parameter to declare the onset of Monsoon has still not met.
Further, we expect that these good showers will persist over Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and even spread to parts of Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra.
With an increase in Monsoon surge and humid winds also reaching up to adjoining Interior Tamil Nadu, which will lead to good rain over the region after June 4. The rain recorded in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on May 31, will be counted in Monsoon rainfall data.
