Monsoon in Mumbai arriving with a bang this week, prepare to face hefty rains

Mumbai RainWhen it comes to Pre-Monsoon season, Mumbai is peculiar to dry weather conditions in the months of March, April remaining the same right up to the month of May. In fact, hot and humid weather is dominant over the region at this point of time.

Only when Monsoon is about to mark its arrival over Kerala and adjoining areas that Pre-Monsoon activity in Mumbai make an appearance. This time also, similar situation prevailed over Mumbai wherein the city remained dry until May.

The first day of June saw light rains and Pre-Monsoon activity has been only increasing since then. On June 2, the city saw moderate spells of 26 mm after which heavy spells of a whopping 51 mm of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours.

The usual onset date of Monsoon over Mumbai is June 10, however, this time, Monsoon is expected to arrive a tad early at around June 8.

With just three days to go, Pre Monsoon activity will continue in an increasing order. In fact, as Monsoon makes an onset over Mumbai, heavy to very heavy rains are expected over the city of Mumbai with occasional extremely heavy spells of rainfall as well.

Residents of Mumbai should be on alert for these hefty Monsoon showers which are expected between June 8 and 10. Water logging, traffic snarls, commute issues for office goers will be the highlight. Mumbai local, which is the lifeline of the city may also be the sufferer. In short, residents may face issues as Mumbai rains will continue at varying intensity.

Due to heavy rains, outlets choke and if at all high tides appear, they will also pump in the water from the sea into the city which could further aggravate the situation.

Talking historically, Mumbai rains have not been this heavy during the first week of June. It is only in the second week that rains have picked pace in Mumbai. A lot also depends on the timely onset of rains. In 2016, Monsoon arrived as late as on June 20.

In the last five years, it was only in 2013 that significant rains were seen in the first ten days of June. Otherwise, rainfall activity has been heavier around June 12 or so.

This year, Pre Monsoon activity has also been on the heavier side and with Monsoon making an early onset, rains are expected to be hefty enough for the maximum city.
