Facing the drought-like conditions since past 3 years, parched Latur has finally received unprecedented rainfall in Monsoon 2016. The Southwest Monsoon that remained active over several areas of Maharashtra and other parts of West Coast during last week has given the highest rainfall of 91 mm in a span of 24 hours. The heavy rainfall over the past few days has also filled all the small dams and check dams in Latur.

Latur had been in news for the water trains that were being sent to the drought hit area. While these trains were supposed to run till June, in absence of any significant rain, this process was extended till July. However, heavy rainfall was observed from 8.30 am on Saturday till 8.30 am on Sunday. Moreover, just before the heavy rain started on Saturday, Latur did receive its 100th Jaldoot- water carrying train.

Some parts of Chandrapur also witnessed flooding, but the disaster management cell said there were no untoward incidents. In Konkan, a few landslides were reported, but there were no casualties, the official said.

After receiving heavy rainfall of such scale in after a span of three years, residents in Latur could not resist from celebrating. Reports of people cheering and celebrating heavy Monsoon rain by way of fireworks have also come in.

Significantly, Manjara river, the lifeline of Latur city that was bone dry until last week, is now flowing with full force, though below the danger level.

The heavy rain was caused by the active Monsoon surge that remained vigorous over Marathwada and Konkan & Goa. There are chances of light rain in Latur and other parts of Marathwada region today as well that is likely to keep the weather pleasant in these areas.
