Monsoon has touched the southern coast of Gujarat and is expected to take some time to cover central parts of the state. However, it has led to good pre-Monsoon showers over Rajkot. In the last 48 hours, the city has received 38 mm of rain.

Light to moderate rain/thundershower is continuing in Rajkot since June 9, which has led to the city surpassing its monthly average rainfall. According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Rajkot, so far in this month has received 142 mm of rain against the June average of 115.2 mm.

Rainfall in south and central Gujarat during the initial days of June was due to the cyclonic storm Ashobaa, which while moving in the Arabian Sea gave rain at many places. Now an offshore trough from south Gujarat extending up to Kerala coast will give good amounts of rain along the west coast, including south and central Gujarat.

Rajkot will observe good pre-Monsoon showers for the next 2 days. But light rain will continue over the city and its adjoining areas for the next 4 to 5 days. This rainfall activity in the city could push the monthly average even further. Before Monsoon covers central Gujarat, most of the stations in the region will surpass the monthly average rainfall.

June so far is turning out to be very good, in terms of rainfall in Gujarat. This is likely to boost the morale of the farmers and help in timely sowing of crops in the state.
