Monsoon Depression To Form Over Bay Of Bengal: Heavy Rains Likely

July 25, 2023 2:14 PM |

Under the influence of cyclonic circulation, a low-pressure area formed over West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) yesterday. It rapidly strengthened into a well marked low-pressure area.  This invest area is centred around 18.3°N and 85.8°E, almost abeam Kalingapatnam, about 150 km from the coast. Conditions are very favourable for the system to quickly intensify into a depression over the same area. It may even pick up a notch higher than depression in the next 24 hours.

Cyclonic circulation of the weather system is extending up to 25,000 feet in height, tilting southwestward.  The convective cloud cluster in association with the low pressure is mainly located over the sea but will gradually close in along the coastline and further inland.  Intense weather activity will be confined to the oceanic region in the next 24 hours.

However, north coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh and south coastal parts of Odisha may come in for intermittent moderate showers, heavy at times, in the next 24 hours. The convergence zone of this system, due to the confluence of streaming monsoon westerlies from the West Coast and turning of winds in the outer peripheral of well-marked low is getting placed over North Interior Karnataka and adjacent parts of South Madhya Maharashtra, South Marathwada and western parts of Telangana.  These areas are likely to have heavy rain and thundershowers over the next 2 days. Intense weather activity will spill over to Rayalaseema as well, tomorrow.

Under the influence of a westerly trough, this weather system in an unusual manner will shift northeastward, over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining parts on 27th July and move further over Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal, the next day. The depression is expected to weaken also during this period. This will also keep the eastern end of the monsoon trough far south of its normal position. The monsoon depression will accentuate westerly winds along the Konkan region, Coastal Karnataka and Goa. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over these pockets between the 25th and 27th of July.
