After remaining weak for over a week, Southwest Monsoon made rapid advancement and reached parts of Bihar yesterday. In fact, Monsoon has also covered Jammu and Kashmir, and most parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand today.
Prior to Monsoon’s advancement, Pre-Monsoon activity occurred over the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Shimla recorded 36 mm of rains, Dharamsala 28 mm, Manali 17 mm, Una 17 mm, and Bhuntar 3 mm.

During the winter months, it is Jammu and Kashmir which observes the most amounts of rain while Uttarakhand sees the least. However, in the Monsoon period, it gets reversed and Uttarakhand sees maximum rains while Jammu and Kashmir see the least.
Monsoon activity for Jammu and Kashmir only occurs under the influence of a passage of Western Disturbance. Meanwhile, rains do occur over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh during the same time span.
For the season, normal Monsoon rains for Jammu and Kashmir stand at 534 mm, Himachal Pradesh at 825 mm and Uttarakhand at 1229 mm.
Uttarakhand sees intense Monsoon rains during this period wherein several holy Yatras also occur.
Advancement of Monsoon brings change in the air mass, which added with mountainous terrain leads to conditions becoming favourable for heavy rains, lightning, which further results in landslides and cloudburst. In fact, the activity gets accentuated during the night time.
Now, as Monsoon has made an onset over the hilly states of North India, heavy rains are in the offing for parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh during the next 48 hours. Thus, with rains in the offing, precautionary measures and vigilance is required.
