Monsoon active in Karnataka; Gulbarga observes record breaking rains

Monsoon had covered most parts of Karnataka on June 17, excluding North Karnataka. By June 19 entire Karnataka region was covered by Monsoon.

Since the beginning of June, coastal areas of Karnataka have been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall continuously. In fact, the state has been observing heavy to moderate rainfall in most pockets. Mangalore over coastal Karnataka has received 86 mm rainfall. Gulbarga in North Interior Karnataka has received 66.2 mm of rain. Honavar and Karwar have also witnessed moderate showers.

The interior parts of Karnataka have also received light to moderate rains. The interior parts of Karnataka are well known for receiving lesser rains as compared to the coastal areas of the region. However, this year, it is predicted that North Interior Karnataka will also receive above normal Monsoon rainfall.

As per Skymet Weather, Gulbarga, which falls in the Interior region of Karnataka, has already broken its last 10 years record of observing highest 24 hours rainfall. The city has witnessed record-breaking showers of 66.2 mm during last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Sunday. Monthly average rainfall recorded for the city for the month of June is 119.1 mm. the highest ever recorded rainfall that the city has witnessed was 144.8 mm on June 8, 1928.

Monsoon surge is active over Karnataka coast and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over south coastal Karnataka is also expected. During next 48 hours, good rainfall will continue in interior Karnataka for next 2 days. Thereafter, the intensity of rains will be more over coastal areas. However, interior regions of the state will not go completely dry as light to moderate rainfall will continue over these areas.

Thereafter another strong Monsoon surge over coastal areas of Karnataka and adjoining Kerala is also expected. Between June 24 and 25, fairly widespread moderate to heavy rain is expected. A few pockets may also observe extremely heavy showers.

Hence, it can be concluded that Monsoon will remain active over coastal areas of Karnataka for at least one week.
