Monsoon 2021: Large excess rains for the state of Telangana so far, more showers in offing

July 22, 2021 2:16 PM |

The state of Telangana has received 60% excess rainfall between June 1 and July 21. Total rainfall recorded is 439.3 against the normal of 274.6 mm.

Moreover, Hyderabad also witnessed heavy spells during this monsoon season. Between July 1 and 21 Hyderabad has already surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 179.2 mm.

In fact, the total rainfall until now in July is 300 mm which is highest rainfall of July over Hyderabad during the decade with the record being at 422.1 mm in 1989.

The reason for this excess rainfall can be attributed to the persistence of a north-south trough extending from eastern parts of the country to Telangana. Humid winds from Arabian Sea as well as from Bay of Bengal were pushing moisture over Telangana leading to Intense weather activities.

We expect many parts of Telangana will receive moderate to heavy rain for another 24 to 48 hours with some pockets seeing very heavy rains as well. Thereafter there will be significant decrease in the rain activities. After July 24, we do not expect any significant rain over the state until end of the month.

Subdued monsoon rains during last week of July will certainly reduce the rain surplus. But month of July for Telangana will end with excess rainfall.
