Monsoon 2021: Dry weather ahead for Gujarat and Rajasthan

June 28, 2021 2:30 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Monsoon has covered the entire Gujarat and Southern parts of Rajasthan on June 18. But since then it has not made further advancement. As of June 27, Saurashtra and Kutch are deficient by 21% whereas the Gujarat region is surplus by 9%. On the other hand, East Rajasthan is normal with just 1% surplus and West Rajasthan is surplus by 54%.

Eastern districts of Gujarat have been receiving on and off rain and thundershower activities. But most of the Saurashtra and Kutch are almost dry. The crops of groundnut and cotton in many parts of Gujarat are drying up and in urgent need of rainwater. Similarly, most of the west Rajasthan in spite of scattered rainfall is facing a drought-like situation. Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jalore, Pali, Rajsamand, Sirohi, and Nagaur have not received sufficient rainfall to sustain the standing crops.

Westerly winds are blowing across the northwest and western part of the country. Progress of monsoon is halted due to these dry winds. The axis of the monsoon trough is shifting in the foothills of the Himalayas. The weather of Gujarat and Rajasthan will go completely dry for at least next week. There may be isolated light rain activities over the southern parts of Gujarat. But they will not be enough to give any significant relief from the ongoing hot and sultry weather conditions.

Due to the upcoming dry spell, the situation of farmers and crops will become even worse. Chances of the revival of monsoon over these states seem to be very slim for at least the next 8 to 10 days.
