Gangetic West Bengal is one of the rainiest sub-division in the eastern parts. Similarly, Konkan is yet another saturated region during the Southwest Monsoon. Mumbai and Kolkata, the two capital cities of these two pockets are again the wettest and they get drowned more than once during the monsoon season.

Monsoon arrival was nearly on time for both cities this season with Kolkata scoring marginal lead having precision onset on 12th June and Mumbai 14th June. Both the cities had the distinction of having the scare of cyclone each, rather early in the season. The month of June, as is known for, is showering different shades of rains for these two cities, pumped by two different arms of the monsoon.

Mumbai and Kolkata are both going neck to neck and have received 284mm and 283mm rain respectively so far. However, Mumbai normal for the month of June is nearly one and a half time more than Kolkata: the respective normal being 493mm and 301mm respectively. While Kolkata has had spurts of rain at regular intervals, Mumbai has been relatively quiet for many days.

In the remaining one week of June, Kolkata is poised for some more showers, moderately intense at times, due to a cyclonic circulation meandering over the eastern parts. Easily it is going to exceed the monthly rainfall, maybe in the next couple of days. On the other hand, the Konkan region hosting Mumbai is not likely to be as vibrant on most of the days. Mumbai may miss its monthly quota and carry forward to July for compensation.
