Monsoon 2020: Flood threat over Bihar, Assam and West Bengal as heavy monsoon rains continues

A trough is extending from northwest Rajasthan to Bihar across south Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Moderate intensity humid winds from the Bay of Bengal also pushing moisture over east and northeast India. The weather systems have already given heavy to very heavy rain and thundershower activities along with lightning strikes over many parts of Bihar killing more than 80 people in the last 24 hours.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Assam have also recorded heavy to very heavy rains. Cooch Behar has received around 400 mm rain in the last three days.

Similarly, many parts of Assam have been receiving heavy downpour leading to floods in many districts of Upper Assam. On Wednesday, around 38,000 people affected in Dhemaji, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh districts, as floodwaters entered Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Golaghat, and Tinsukia districts, raising the overall figure to over 1.9 lakh.

Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger level mark. Heavy rains are expected to continue over many parts of Assam until June 28 which will further worsen the flood situation. The intensity of rain will decrease by June 29, but on and off moderate hours will continue.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will also so get heavy down for until June 29 which may lead to flooding in many parts of northern districts of West Bengal.

Flooding rains and lightning strikes are expected to continue over Bihar and adjoining foothills of Himalaya until June 28. These heavy rains may lead to flooding in the northern districts of Bihar.
