Southwest Monsoon arrives over Kerala on June 1 and then takes on its journey forward. On the other hand, the states of Punjab, Haryana along with extreme western areas of Rajasthan are the last to be covered.
During the El Nino years, the pace of Monsoon is erratic being at times sluggish, and undue with other times Monsoon being fast. In 2014, which was an El Nino, saw the Monsoon arrival on June 6, covered the entire country on July 17. However, in the year 2009, which was also an El Nino year, saw Monsoon making an onset over the entire country.
Usually, Monsoon makes an arrival by June 29 over Delhi and by July 3-4, Punjab as well as Haryana see the onset of Monsoon. However, this time, there has been a delay in Monsoon arrival and it made an onset over Delhi only on July 5. Today, Monsoon did make an onset over more parts of Punjab and Haryana.
Even until July 9, parts of Haryana bordering Rajasthan, and Malwa in Punjab is yet to see Monsoon rainfall activities. Southwest Monsoon has been delayed and it looks like it may take at least four to five days for Monsoon to cover remaining parts of Punjab and Haryana, i.e. until around July 14 or 15.
At present, rainfall deficiency persists in both states, with Punjab being rain deficient by 53 percent and Haryana by 57 percent. Next two days, some light rains are expected in parts of Punjab and Haryana. Meanwhile, along the foothills, with cities of Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Ropar, Chandigarh, Ambala, Yamunanagar may see good rains.
