By June 5, Monsoon usually covers entire Karnataka along with Kerala. However, this time the arrival was a little late and the formation of Cyclon Vayu further pulled down its progress.
At present, Coastal Karnataka stands at a deficiency of 42%, North Interior Karnataka is normal at –18% and South Interior Karnataka at –3%. Adding to this, Monsoon 2019 will cover the remaining parts of Karnataka during the formation of the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal around June 21.
Since there is no major weather system brewing, heavy rains seem to be ruled out. A low-pressure area is expected to form in the Bay around June 21. Thus, between June 21-23 rain might pick up in Coastal Karnataka. During this period, moderate to heavy rains are expected over Coastal Karnataka. While the interior parts will witness light to moderate rains.
Barring coastal Karnataka, light rains will be observed in the rest of the state. Therefore, June will most probably end on a deficit note.
Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka are the three sub-divisions of the state. They witness a wide difference in Monsoon performance. Coastal Karnataka is one of the rainiest pockets of the country. It is sandwiched between Konkan and Goa in the North and Kerala in the South.
North and South Interior Karnataka have far less quantum of rainfall during the season.
The first half of the season is rainier than the second half for Coastal Karnataka. While, for the interior areas, the case is vice-versa. Mangalore and Karwar record monthly rainfall in four digits. For the month of June and July, Mangalore’s monthly rainfall is 1045 mm and 1104 mm of rains, respectively. Similarly, its adjacent pocket Karwar’s monthly rainfall for June and July is 950 mm and 980 mm of rains, respectively.
While, on the other hand, places in North Interior Karnataka record rainfall in three digits. For instance, Vijayapura records 109 mm and 75 mm of rains for the months of June and July, respectively.
This clearly shows the variation of rainfall in the state.
