Monsoon in Northeast India

Good rains and thundershowers have been lashing the Northeast India for the past two weeks at least. In the past 24 hours also, good showers have been observed over many parts of West Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura.

Now, a Cyclonic Circulation is over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh and humid winds are feeding moisture over the region. Thus, rain intensity is all set to increase over Tripura and Mizoram. There are chances of heavy to very heavy rains over these areas.

Rains will be between light to moderate over many areas of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. These rains will continue with moderate showers and one or two heavy spells until June 9. On June 10, rain intensity will reduce slightly. However, western parts of Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya will continue to see good showers thereafter also.

The onset of Southwest Monsoon is expected around June 8 in some parts of Northeast India when it arrives over Kerala. The entire Northeast India will see the onset of Monsoon by June 12. In fact, these Pre Monsoon activities will gradually merge in Monsoon rains in the next 48 hours.

Thereafter also, rains will continue, and no dry spell is expected for at least another 10 to 15 days. Even Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim will see some good rains during this time.
