The state of Kerala was largely rain deficient until a few days ago. However, for the past two to three days, heavy to very heavy rains have been lashing many parts of Kerala due to which there has been some reduction in the rain deficiency.
Rains during the last 48 hours, which were mostly heavy and intense in nature can be attributed to Cyclone Vayu which was lying as a depression over Southeast Arabian Sea.
Now, the state of Kerala is rain deficient by 46 percent. The persisting rain deficiency can be attributed to the week long delayed onset of Monsoon over the state of Kerala. Monsoon finally made an onset over Kerala on June 8.
Now, we expect on and off rains in Kerala to continue with light to moderate showers occurring over the region. Some parts may see heavy rains as well.
Now, Cyclone Vayu has moved north northwestwards and is over East Central Arabian Sea and will further move northwards. As the Cyclone has moved further north, now, southwesterly strong winds have commenced over Kerala.
Thus, good rains will continue for another three to four days due to Monsoon surge being active over the region. Dry spell is not likely to make a comeback and significant decrease in rain intensity is not to be seen in the coming week. Temperatures will continue to settle in the pleasant range due to ongoing rains.
