Monsoon 2018: No relief from heavy rains in flood hit Himachal, Uttarakhand

September 24, 2018 1:37 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The enchanting hills of North India, particularly Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been witnessing heavy to extremely heavy rains from the last 48 hours, triggering massive flooding across the region. The ferocity did not end here, and the states even dealt with scores of landslides and mudslides.

The sight has been dangerous as several vehicles were washed away. Many highways have been shut and hundreds of passengers and vehicles have been stranded across roads. Torrential rains have pushed the water levels in Kullu’s Beas River above the danger mark.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Manali recorded hefty rains to the tune of 121 mm, followed by Chamba 117 mm, Dharamshala 63 mm, Una 62 mm, Nahan 52 mm, Mukteshwar 48 mm, Haridwar 42 mm, Nainital 35 mm, Mussoorie 31 mm, Dehradun 30 mm, Tehri 29 mm, Kullu 28 mm and Shimla 23 mm.

According to weathermen at Skymet Weather, we do not expect any relief from the ongoing heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for at least the next 24 hours.

These ongoing rains can be attributed to an active Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir, along with the well-marked low pressure now seen over North Rajasthan and adjoining Southwest Uttar Pradesh and South Haryana. Both the systems have been interacting with each other through a north-south trough, bringing some extremely heavy rains over the hilly states.

The well-marked low pressure area is now weakening and recurves northeastwards. The Western Disturbance is also moving away eastwards.

Nevertheless, heavy to extremely heavy rains are expected to continue over several places of the states like Dharamshala, Kullu, Manali, Shimla, Nainital, Dehradun, Almora, Tehri, Haridwar and Rishikesh till Tuesday.

We expect relief Wednesday onwards, as rains would reduce significantly. However, light rains with isolated moderate spells would continue.
