Monsoon 2017 to remain active over Andaman and Nicobar Islands

June 6, 2017 4:56 PM |

Rain in Andaman

Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been witnessing a good spell of rain since the time Monsoon 2017 has arrived and has been active in these regions. Particularly the southern parts of islands including Nancowry, Car Nicobar, and Hut Bay have received moderate to heavy rainfall activities. Whereas, Port Blair has received extremely heavy rainfall and thundershower activities during the last 24 hours.

According to Skymet Weathermen, heavy to very heavy rains lashed several parts of the islands, with few recording extremely heavy showers as well. These ongoing rainfall and thundershower activities over the region can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation to be seen over East Central Bay of Bengal. With this, we expect moderate to heavy showers to continue over the region during the next 24 to 48 hours.

In the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Port Blair recorded 215 mm of rainfall, Long Island 70 mm, Maya Bandar 38 mm, Car Nicobar 23 mm, Nancowry 12 mm and Hut Bay 11 mm.

In wake of this, we can expect rains to increase significantly over Andaman and Nicobar Islands. However, these on and off showers will continue even after 48 hours over these groups of islands.

Tourists are advised to postpone their trip to these islands because of heavy downpours in these areas. Also, locals are warned not to venture out along and off the seashore.
