In the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon season, i.e. during the month of June, Northwest and Central India along with Southwest Peninsula received good rains.
Not only this, Northwest India in particular witnessed decent rains throughout June and ended with a surplus of 52 percent. These showers were attributed to the presence of frequently appearing Western Disturbances and induced cyclonic circulations.
Coming to the month of July, good rains were seen over most parts of the country during this time as well but they were not as good as June. Thus, the rain surplus of Northwest India dropped to 18 percent due to less number of rainy days.
South Peninsular India which was observing a rainfall surplus of 8 percent at the end of June, it did drop down to a deficiency of 17 percent due to the absence of very heavy rains over the region. Thus, the month of July ended on a surplus of 2 percent.

However, rainfall activity did reduce across the country during the month of August which is why until August 21, the countrywide cumulative rainfall stands deficient with 4 percent.
Currently, East India is the only region which has been recording a rainfall surplus at 3 percent. Other areas remained deficient. In terms of area, the highest rainfall deficiency is in West Uttar Pradesh at 35 percent.
Currently, eight sub-divisions of the country are rain deficient. While none of the subdivisions happen to be rain deficient in Northeast and East India, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi are the rain deficient regions in Northwest India.
Similarly, Vidarbha as well as Madhya Pradesh are the deficient regions while Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala are the deficient pockets in South Peninsular India.
Now, we expect that remaining parts of August will be rainy for central parts of India and good showers will occur over states of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Southeast Rajasthan.
However, rainfall activity will be on the lower side over South Peninsula. Meanwhile, normal rains are expected over Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Uttarakhand normal rains. However, West Rajasthan will remain dry.
