Monsoon 2017: Mumbai rains to take back seat, light rains to continue

July 5, 2017 4:45 PM |

Rain in Mumbai

Mumbai received heavy to very heavy rainfall between June 22 and July 1. The reason for this sudden increase of rain intensity over Mumbai was due to the formation of a cyclonic circulation over Gujarat and adjoining Northeast Arabian Sea and an active trough running from this weather system up to Kerala.

Since then the intensity of rainfall has reduced and scattered light to moderate rains are going on over the city. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am only 6.6 mm of light rain occurred over Mumbai.

Due to the heavy rains earlier over Mumbai Monsoon became active and rain intensity increased but now this Monsoon surge has weakened due to the weakening of an off-shore trough. Hence, we expect light to moderate rains to continue for the next three to four days over Mumbai and adjoining areas.

As per Skymet Weather, in spite of good rains, Mumbai city is still rain deficit by 15%. This Monsoon season only 567.1 mm of rain has occurred against the normal of 679.8 mm between June 1 and July 4.

Weather conditions are warm and humid. Temperatures are in lower 30’s and these weather conditions are not likely to change for the next few days.
