Many parts of northeastern states have received good rain and thundershowers in the past 24 hours. Particularly, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have recorded heavy to extremely heavy showers.
In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Cherrapunji recorded a whopping 296 mm of rainfall, followed by Pasighat 228 mm, Shillong 201 mm, Goalpara 114 mm, Agartala 103 mm, Tezpur 87 mm, Anni 84 mm, Mazbat 82 mm, North Lakhimpur 70 mm, Dubri 57 mm, Itanagar 55 mm and Dibrugarh 54 mm.
These heavy rains can be attributed to the axis of Monsoon trough that is running across North Bihar up to East Assam. Weathermen at Skymet Weather expect heavy to very heavy rains will continue over the northeastern states for the next 48 hours as well.
Assam is again reeling under flooding rains. So much so that heavy rains lashed the state inundating five more districts of Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Chirang and Kokrajhar in the last 24 hours.

Due to these heavy rains, the current flood situation in Assam may deteriorate further. By August 14 or 15, we expect a significant decrease in the rain intensity over most parts of Assam. However, light rains will continue to whip the state. Due to a decrease in rain intensity, the weather situation will start improving.
