Monsoon 2016: Heavy rainfall likely in Northeast India

July 14, 2016 1:10 PM | Skymet Weather Team

During the last 24 hours, moderate to heavy showers have been observed over Assam and Meghalaya. The rest parts of Northeastern states have received light to moderate rains.

Now axis of Monsoon trough is moving towards North and we expect that it will shift over foothills of Himalayas with in next 24 hours. The eastern end of the trough will also shift towards the foothills in another 48 hours. Therefore we expect the rain intensity to increase over most parts of northeastern states, particularly over Assam and Meghalaya.

These places may receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during next 3-4 days.

These rains may even indulge into flood like condition over some districts of Assam such as Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Lakhimpur and Kokrajhar. Whenever axis of Monsoon runs along the foothills of Himalayas, torrential rains are experienced over hills of Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan and Assam.

We expect that rain intensity will start decreasing from July 21-22. Till then moderate showers at many places will continue whereas few spells of heavy showers are also expected over the entire region.

At present, Assam and Meghalaya are 37% rain deficient whereas in comparison, Arunachal Pradesh is 14% rain deficient. The states like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are 34% rain deficient.

Till now all the Northeast states have received lesser rainfall than normal. So this rainy spell of another 4-5 days may improve the rain statistics.
