The Northeast India is one such region that receives comparatively less rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon season. But after a long a gap certain states in the region like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura have recorded moderate to heavy spells.
This particular region has not received any significant rain due to lack of any major weather system formation during this Monsoon season. But a system has formed over Northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Myanmar.
This system is likely to intensify and move in a westerly direction. This will be the one of the first weather systems affecting the area.
Fairly widespread moderate and heavy spells are likely to be expected over the region. Already the area has been covered with thick clouds and light rain has already commenced over the areas.
Agartala received 2 mm of rains, Imphal recorded 21 mm, and light rain was observed over Shillong and Cherrapunji.
Apart from four states, this weather system is likely to provide good rains over whole Northeast India in the next 24 hours. At present, till August 20, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura region is rainfall deficient by 26% below the normal. This figure may improve as good rains have stated to lash the region.
