Monsoon Showers For Delhi And Suburbs: Wet Weekend Likely

Moderate Rain Predicted for Today in Delhi, Image: Times of India

Typical monsoon showers have evaded most parts of Delhi in August, so far. Rainfall has been patchy and light in Delhi/NCR between 01st and 06th August. In the past 24 hours, base observatory Safdarjung recorded 0.2mm and airport Palam no rainfall.  Most parts of Delhi had nil rainfall and only very few pockets had light sprinkles for a brief period. The intensity and spread of these showers are likely to pick up.

The monsoon trough is keeping proximity to Delhi, running slightly south of the national capital. The western end of the trough is nearly normal passing through Ganganagar, Hisar, Agra, Prayagraj and thence southeastward. The persistent cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh has dragged the eastern end south of its position and therefore, the trough is fairly inclined and oriented northwest-southeast. The position of the trough remains favourable for monsoon activity over and around Delhi, right till the weekend. Similar conditions are likely during next week also.

Moderate rain and thundershowers are likely today and tomorrow. With a cloudy sky, conditions will be favourable for light rain at any time of the day. More activity is expected in the evening and night. Oscillation of the trough may reduce the intensity on Friday. However, the northward shift of the trough on the weekend will favour increased cover and strength. Showers could be more frequent and cover a wide area. Day temperature will stay in the low 30’s and the minimum temperature in the mid 20’s for the next 4-5 days. Persistent cloud cover, mild breeze and fleeting showers will keep the overall weather conditions fairly pleasant, more so, in the late evening and night.
