Moderate to heavy rains in Kodaikanal, Valparai, Ooty, Coimbatore to continue

The state of Tamil Nadu is 10% rain deficient at preset. However, during the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu received widespread rain and thundershower activity especially over the southern parts.

In fact, heavy rains were observed over the Nilgiri region and south coastal stations. Meanwhile, the capital city, Chennai and its adjoining areas remained almost dry.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Friday, Kodaikanal recorded 77 mm of rain, followed by Valparai 42 mm, Pamban 32 mm, Coimbatore 24 mm, Coonoor 18 mm, Madurai 2.3 mm and Karaikal 0.2 mm.

At present, a cyclonic circulation is seen over Coastal Sri Lanka and its adjoining areas. A trough is also running from this system up to Central Maharashtra Coast. This system is likely to slope gradually over the southern tips of Tamil Nadu.

Therefore, moderate rains will occur over many places of South Tamil Nadu and Northwest Tamil Nadu, such as Kodaikanal, Valparai, Ooty, Coimbatore, Madurai and Karaikal.

Meanwhile, rest all other places like the northeastern districts including the capital city, Chennai and Pondicherry will mainly see light rainfall activity. Moreover, easterly southeasterly winds are expected to prevail over the area.
