The entire country had been experiencing extremely hot conditions for the last 10 days, with many places observing heat wave conditions. But Northeast India experienced some very good rain during this period. It was the only pocket in the country where some weather activity was being observed and temperatures were under check.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday,JorhatinAssamrecorded 79.8 mm of rain. Lakhimpur andTezpurobserved 44.1 mm and 40.2 mm of rain, respectively. InArunachal Pradesh,Itanagarrecorded 34.4 mm of rainfall, while Passighat experienced 17.3 mm of rain.
The region has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the last one week, which has helped many places in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to surpass the monthly average rainfall.
For instance, in last 8 days, Tejpur has recorded a whopping 230 mm of rain. This takes the total amount of rainfall received so far during the month to 344 mm, which is higher than the monthly average rainfall of 261 mm. During the same period,Guwahatihas recorded 120 mm of rain which pushes up the rainfall in the city to 290 mm against the monthly normal of 256 mm. Lakhimpur has also observed 386 mm of rainfall so far against the normal average of 381.6 mm. During the eight-day period the city experienced 233 mm of rain.
The reason behind good rainfall in Northeast India is a cyclonic circulation in Bihar and adjoining areas, and a cyclonic circulation over Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. According to Skymet the weather activity is expected to continue in the region for another 4-5 days.
