The state of Tamil Nadu has seen good downpours this Southwest Monsoon season. It is a strange wonder for the state, as it falls under the rain shadow region and thus, does not record much rainfall during the season.

In fact, the majority of the southern areas have been witnessing good showers, contrary to the prolonged dry spell across North and Central India.

In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Vellore recorded light rainfall of 12.2 mm, followed by the capital city Chennai recorded 4 mm, Kodaikanal 1.5 mm and Coonoor 1 mm.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a trough which is seen extending from Bihar up to Coastal Karnataka across Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

Due to this weather system affecting the state, moderate to heavy rains are expected to lash several districts of North Tamil Nadu during the next two to three days. Whereas, southern districts of Tamil Nadu will continue to witness almost dry weather conditions but isolated spells cannot be ruled out.

Districts such as Chennai, Coonoor, Salem, Vellore, Udhagamandalam, Coimbatore and Kodaikanal will witness good rains during the next few days.

In the meantime, the day temperatures are expected to remain around 25-26 degree Celsius. Whereas, the minimum temperatures will be settling around 19-20 degree Celsius mark. With this, pleasant weather conditions are likely to prevail over the most parts of the state.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, moderate to heavy showers over northern districts of Tamil Nadu will help in boosting  the soil moisture level for upcoming Rabi season. Besides, Tamil Nadu receives around 60% of annual rainfall during the months of October to December.
