Monsoon 2019 has been vigorous over Kerala and Coastal Karnataka for the past few days, bringing in flooding rains over both the regions. Last 24 hours were no different and as predicted heavy to extremely heavy rains lashed both the states.
Agumbe recorded 212 mm of rains in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, followed by Karwar 171 mm, Honavar 82 mm, Mangaluru 58 mm, Madikeri 53 mm, Kannur 45 mm, Thrissur 49 mm, Kalaburgi 31 mm, and Kozhikode 10 mm.
According to Skymet Weather, we can now expect some relief from these flooding rains in the coming days. The off-shore trough along the West Coast which has been active particularly along Kerala and Karnataka would start getting less marked. The strong inflow of westerly winds would also reduce due to the likely formation of an anti cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea.
Rains would start reducing on August 15 itself but moderate rains with few heavy spells would continue across Kerala and Coastal Karnataka for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, by August 16-17, there would be significant drop in rains across the states.
According to weathermen, we would see no significant rain and thundershowers for the next three-four days or at least till August 21.
Until few days back, Monsoon 2019 has made a very dismissal performance over Kerala and Coastal Karnataka. both the pockets had been battling high rainfall deficiency. However, Monsoon rains bounced back by July end that helped the region to cover up the rainfall deficiency. As on August 14, Kerala is witnessing normal rains, while Coastal Karnataka is now also normal with surplus rain by 10%.
